Troop 73 leaders changed the annual Canoe trip, which is typically on the Wading River, at the last minute to a trip on the challenging Mullica River. It was a game-day call after a fire near the Wading River campsite forced the troop to find an alternate trip. Annie and Bob Fromtling stepped in and changed reservations to save the trip. Annie, Bob and Tim Avis again brought their significant skills and experience to pass knowledge down to the latest generation of Scouts and their parents.
The trip was split on day 1 with new Scouts doing a lake paddling to learn the ropes and more experienced paddlers heading out to the Mullica. Day 2 involved more padding on the lake and a jaunt up the mouth of the Mullica.
We thought the the trip on the Mullica was 9.5 miles, but we did 11 — why not! A long day with low water levels, lots of fallen trees and many difficult switchbacks left the Scouters sore and the Scouts tired out. But the weather was perfect. The lead boats even saw a golden eagle perched in a tree who then swooped down near them and a deer who jumped right in front of canoe.
